SADDLE ADJUSTMENT: THE BRP

In order to achieve a comfortable ride and high performance, the saddle must be adjusted according to precise measurement criteria.

After numerous studies and surveys of cyclists, idmatch has identified a scientific system for saddle adjustment that is valid for all brands and types, based on a point called BRP (Biomechanical Reference Point).

This is a sort of centre of gravity, i.e. the median line where the saddle reaches a width of 70 mm, and is the reference from which to measure the parameters useful for mounting the saddle itself (height, setback, distance from the handlebars).

The identification of the BRP comes from the observation of the attitude of the cyclists, from which a constant emerges: the sitting position of each cyclist is at an always equal distance from the BRP.

This distance is subjective, that is, it differs from cyclist to cyclist.

According to a series of tests carried out in the field, however, more than 60% of cyclists sit too far forward on the saddle, which means that their weight rests mainly on the pubic symphysis rather than on the ischial bones, as it should.

This not only invalidates the comfort that saddles can provide, but also leads to the possibility of pain and discomfort in the pelvic area.

To help cyclists sit correctly on the saddle, idmatch test saddles feature the BRP (Biomechanical Reference Point) line on the cover.

Furthermore, thanks to the Positioning Tool, it is easier to obtain all the necessary information and parameters, such as BRP, saddle tilt, distance from the handlebars and bottom bracket, for the ideal positioning of your saddle.

A cyclist’s position on their road bike is unique and differs from that of any other individual. This is because the optimal position is the result of a combination of morphological, functional, and postural factors. To obtain a reliable and scientifically valid biomechanical assessment, it is equally important to evaluate the cyclist in the most […]
How to choose the optimal saddle
There is no doubt that one of the most important points for comfort on a bike is the support on the saddle. Amateurs, amateurs and professionals are constantly looking for a comfortable and functional support, which guarantees their comfort but also an adequate performance. Furthermore, inadequate support on the saddle can accentuate problems already present […]
How to choose crank length?
The inability to perceive in the short term the advantages or disadvantages of a longer or shorter crank length leads to the mistaken belief that the choice of this component can be cursory. If you look at the numbers that result from different choices you can immediately understand how important an adequate crank length is. […]
